Own a digitally imaged print of this historically significant work of art. In the full-length portrait, General George Washington assumes a heroic pose; his right hand lightly holds the reins resting on the neck of a large white horse, which bows its head as if to honor the great man. In the distance, American troops form two review lines that stretch across the Hudson River plain at Verplancks? Point, New York, where Washington had located his headquarters in the fall of 1782. They are waiting for the French troops, under the leadership of the Comte de Rochambeau, to pass through their ranks on their march from Virginia to return to France. The rendezvous was arranged so that the Americans could honor the French after their crucial involvement at the battle of Yorktown the previous year, forcing the British under Cornwallis to surrender, ending the Revolution.

This painting was considered by George Washington's family to most closely represent the true man and was presented to Martha Washington as a token of the great love and admiration America held for her husband. The original now hangs in the Baltimore Drawing Room at Winterthur. Made in USA.
