In the 17th - 19th centuries, girls learned needelwork so that they would be proficient as adults. Some learned at home while others were sent to schools to learn under skilled needlewoman. This kit is a reproduction of a sampler created by Mary Ann Hoover in 1818 and features typical Philadlephia motifs of a bucolic country estate. The original sampler is part of the over 700 pieces of needlework in the Winterthur collection. Kit is made in USA.
Kit includes colored picture or photography of completed kit, a chart of design, silk
embroidery floss, 100% linen (40 count), needle, instructions for working sampler, a stitch diagram and historical information on the sampler.
Intermediate skill level. Worked in cross-stitch, algerian eye, stem, lazy daisy, chain, satin tent and cross over one thread.
