In the 17th - 19th centuries, girls learned needelwork so that they would be proficient as adults. Some learned at home while others were sent to schools to learn under skilled needlewoman. This kit is a reproduction of a sampler created in the United States sometime between 1800 and 1825. The original sampler is part of the over 700 pieces of needlework in the Winterthur collection. Kit is made in USA.
Kit includes colored picture or photograph of completed kit, a chart of design, silk embroidery floss, 100% linen (35 count), needle, instructions for working sampler, a stitch diagram and historical information on the sampler.
Intermediate skill level. Worked in cross-stitch over one thread and satin stitch.
