Introduction and technical summary by Alan Smith
John Wyke (1720-87) was a successful craftsman and manufacturer in the small but highly specialized tool trade of Lancashire, England. His catalogue illustrates in great detail the wide range of tools commercially available to watch- and clockmakers in the second half of the 18th-century and has the distinction of being the earliest known catalogue. Alan Smith provides extensive historical and technical annotations of the plates and a detailed biography of Wyke together with a history of the manufacturing enterprise that Wyke began and Thomas Green continued.
