Americans have enjoyed their gardens since colonial times, and a wide range of garden ornament has evolved over the years to increase their enjoyment. In the 1800s, American manufacturers produced a wealth of metal garden furniture and ornament designed to beautify gardens large and small. By the early 1900s, suppliers offered a variety of wooden furnishings for the garden. An early 20th-century catalogue of wood garden furniture in the Winterthur Library illustrates a wide range of ornament designed to make gardens “more livable, beautiful and inviting.”
