18th Century Pocket Kit

For centuries, instruction in needlework was an important part of women's education. Skills were then used to generate income, to give pleasure to friends and family through their artistry, or to embellish textiles and clothing in their home.

This 18th Century Pocket Kit is a counted cross stitch adaptation of the earliest known and dated Pennsylvania German embroidered pocket, which is part of the Winterthur Museum collection. In the 18th century, women often carried small items in these sewn pouches, which tied at the waist under a skirt or apron.
