Ann Flower, a Quaker, was born in 1743 and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1765, she married Samuel Wheeler, an iron master. That same year, she created a lovely little prayer book. It was worked in wool with silk accents. The technique used is known today by several terms; Bargello, Florentine, Flame Stitch and Irish Stitch. This type of embroidery is done with staggered vertical stitches forming the pattern.

During the 1760's, Ann also created a book of sketches including birds, beasts, flowers and people all worked in watercolor, pen and pencil.
