Isnik Tin Plate

Isnik pottery of the Ottoman period was among the most colorful ever made. This beautiful enameled tin plate is a reproduction of a fritware dish, thinly covered with white slip and painted under a clear glaze. The brilliant palette, exuberant stems of flowers springing from a central point near the rim, and breaking wave border are typical of Isnik designs of about 1550. Imported.

This plate accompanies the upcoming exhibit "Dining by Design: Nature Displayed on the Dinner Table" at Winterthur, April 1, 2018 - January 6, 2019.

From the 1600's to the present, dinnerware designs have been inspired by nature. Delight in this unusual, and often humorous, exhibition as you explore a visual feast of flora and fauna adorning hundred of dazzling ceramics and tablewares.
