Quilts in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection

Written by Linda Eaton

This well-illustrated volume weaves it's story around the life and times of Mary Remington, providing both a historical and cultural context for the 40 stunning quilts from Winterthur that are highlighted.  A whitework quilt worked by Mary in 1815 sets the stage for the discussion of the selected examples.  With the strength of the quilt collection falling into the period of the late 1700s and early 1800s, these rare survivals have never been exhibited or published as a group, and most are reproduced here for the first time.  A final chapter explores Henry Francis du Pont's use of quilts in early twentieth-century interior design.
