The eighteenth-century was a time when Britain and her colonies were infatuated with things Chinese. In cabinetmaking, the most pervasive effect was the design of the ball-and-claw foot, a motif derived from the ancient Chinese myth of a dragon clutching the pearl of wisdom. This finely carved side chair is reproduction of a chair crafted in Philadelphia around 1760. The original can currently be seen in the Readbourne Stair Hall.
