Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854), one of the most famous of all American furniture makers, was renowned for the beauty of his designs and the excellence of his craftsmanship. Legs like these were made popular by Duncan Phyfe in the early 19th century and were copied by other New York cabinet makers.

H. F. du Pont was especially fond of Phyfe's work and assembled a room of outstanding examples of his artistry. Based on a card table currently on display in the Phyfe Room here at Winterthur.
