George Washington Print by Gilbert Stuart

Print on Demand Reproductions From Winterthur
Winterthur's portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart is considered successful because it conveys the dignity and force of America's most notable citizen. Though born and raised in Rhode Island, Gilbert Stuart perfect his craft and gained a reputation as a skilled portraitist.

After 18 years abroad, Stuart returned to America and it was inevitable that a painter of his status would do a portrait of George Washington.

He painted his first portrait of Washington in 1795 in Philadelphia. Stuart's daughter recounted that her father, normally warm and lively during portrait sittings, found himself tongue-tied and nervous when meeting Washington.
