Mrs Eliza Anne Purves looks loving at her husband, Captain John Purves in this beautiful print based on Winterthur's 17th-century painting. The original was created in honor of their marriage at the start of the Revolutionary War.

Artist Henry Benbridge was in born in Philadelphia and was from a well-to-do family. He studied painting in Italy and came back to America to become well known for being particularly adept at painting the heads of his subjects. Scotland born, John Purves, immigrated to America in 1770 and after serving several posts during the Revolutionary War, and went on to serve in the South Carolina legislature and own a sizable amount of land.
